Read Article from Leader Post Below

The stage is set for the biggest game in the young football careers of Payton Hall and Mathew Wallace.
On Jan. 8 in San Antonio, Texas, they will suit up for Team Canada against an American squad in the Eastbay Youth All-American Bowl, an all-star game for players under 15. The game is played in conjunction with the U.S. Army All-American Bowl game. Both games are organized by a development group, Football University.
For Wallace and Hall, the anticipation is building.
"It's insane,'' said Wallace, a Grade 10 offensive lineman from Balfour Collegiate. "It is a little bit scary going in thinking that there are people representing your country, but I think as soon as I get down there, the fear is going to go away and I'll just try to focus on my job and help the team.
"I'm hoping that going down and playing against some people that are the best in the U.S. is going to help me along, because when you play against the best of the best, it is the only way that you are going to improve.''
Hall - a Grade 9 defensive back from Campbell Collegiate - and Wallace are to leave for Texas on Jan. 4.
"I think it will be fun to play the American rules,'' Hall said. "It will be different from what we are used to here in Canada. It will be a good challenge and a good experience."
The team is coached by Len Antonini, the vice-president of Regina Minor Football. Antonini organized the FBU tryout camp in May, which is when Hall and Wallace were recruited to the team.
Of Hall, Antonini said: "He is a quick kid that really understands the game. He has been playing against grade 11 and 12s for this whole year and he doesn't look out of place there at all."
As for the 6-foot-5, 260-pound Wallace, Antonini said: "He is a big kid with great feet. Those are the type of kids that you need down there."
Antonini coached last year's Canadian team - which included Regina's Atlee Simon - to a 42-37 victory and is excited for another opportunity to participate in the game.
"I've never represented my country in any sport before," he said. "To represent your country and go down and have an opportunity to coach a game like that and end up beating them in Texas, at their game, it was unbelievable."
Antonini said that FBU holds camps throughout Canada, which is what makes the selections of Hall and Wallace all the more special.
"When you take a look at Saskatchewan, we have one million people and places like Ontario have 14 million,'' he noted. "A couple kids coming from here, that is pretty good numbers when we only take 28 kids down. It shows that our football here in Saskatchewan is second to none in Canada.
"Our top kids are as good as their top kids down there, even though they are drawn from 10 times the number of kids that we draw from.''
Numbers aside, Antonini said that having two players from Regina representing Canada in this game shows the promise that football in Saskatchewan possesses.
"If you are being realistic, most of the kids in Saskatchewan will end up playing in Saskatchewan," Antonini said. "We have great CIS programs and great junior programs here, but this just gives them another chance to be looked at by other guys. At the end of the day, it improves the kids. When you play against the best kids in Canada or play against the best kids in North America, you can't help but get better."

© Copyright (c) The Regina Leader-Post

EastBay Youth All-American Bowl Link: http://www.eastbay.com/eastbayyouthallamericanbowl/
Read more: http://www.leaderpost.com/sports/Hall+Wallace+Texas/5912921/story.html#ixzz1iXGdsZl6

2011 Schwann Conference All-stars

From left to right; Kris Charuk, Mitchell Nelson, Riley Wilson, Willie McGee, Liam Schwartz, Ryan Serbu, Sean Belisle

This years winners were presented at the Turvey Centre as part of an expanded awards banquet for the RIFL. They did just that as Brady Mackay found the endzone on the opening drive. Unfortunately, an offside penalty negated the score and the Redmen came up short on their 3rd down attempt. In the first half, Riffel would find themselves up 12-0 on 2 uncoverted touchdowns despite the defenses best efforts. With just 2 minutes remaining in the 1st half the Balfour Redmen needed to respond, and they did. A brilliant catch by Riley Hadiken moved the ball into Riffel territory and the Redmen offense finished a 3 play drive with a TD pass that stood up, to Brady Mackay. Trailing 12-7 at half time the Redmen had momentum on their side and were looking to repeat last weeks come from behind victory. Unfortunately, the Redmen had some costly turnovers and some close plays that didnt go their way (Fake Punt attempt) in the second half. Behind a great Offensive Line, RB Mason Rossler and the Riffel Royals would keep to their potent rushing attack and eventually pull away in the latter stages of the 4th Quarter. Great effort by everyone... certainly was not the result we were looking for but everyone can be proud of the successes we did have in this game and throughout the year.

How Great I Am

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; The Redmen got off to a nightmare start in the first half that saw 3 turnorvers, a bad break on a scoring play and numerous penalties on both sides of the ball. The score was 12-0 at half, 10 of those points being scored off turnovers. The Redmen were hoping to forget the 1st half and come out firing in the second half. On the opening kickoff of the 2nd half the Redmen took two 15 yard penalties. This would sum up most of the evening as Campbell would go on to a well earned 24-0 victory. The schedule does not get any easier as the Redmen face Leboldus and Riffel in the last two weeks of regular season play.

Week 4 - Balgonie 3 vs Balfour 67

Players of the Game

Offensive Player - QB Spencer Pawliw
Defensive Player - OL/DL Sean Belisle
Special Teams Player - REC Riley Wilson
Lineman - OL/DL Adam Despins
Hit of the Game - DB Luke Wilson
Practice Player of the Week - DB Brandon Jelinski

It was a beautiful day at Leibel field where the Redmen (4-0) took on the injury plagued Greenall Griffins (0-4) from Balgonie. Balfour started off strong with a quick 2 and out from the defense, followed by a punt return for a TD by Special Teams Player of the game Riley Wilson. The offense would get in on the action later as QB Spencer Pawliw hooked up with REC Riley Hadiken to get down inside the 5 yard line. From there, RB Matt Frass finished off the opening drive by beating the Balgonie defenders to the corner for a quick 14-0 lead. Balfour would build on that lead which allowed for everyone to get into the game on this night. Week 5 will see the Redmen face their toughest opposition to date when they face the Campbell Tartans (3-1) next Thursday at Mosaic.

Week 3 - Balfour 20 vs Knoll 12

Players of the Game

Offensive Player - REC Riley Hadiken
Defensive Player - DB Liam Schwartz
Special Teams Player - K/P Willie McGee - 2 FG's
Lineman - OL/DL Adam Despins
Hit of the Game - OL/DL Jaeger Sutherland
Practice Player of the Week - FB/S Tanner Brightman

Tale of two different halfs in Week 3. The Balfour Redmen (3-0) got off to a fast start with a score on their first offensive play of the game. RB Matt Frass threw a 45 yard TD strike to Riley Hadiken. On the ensuing kickoff the Redmen recovered the ball and proceeded to rack up 13 more unanswered points for a quick 20-0 lead. In the second half the Wolverines (1-2) generated some momentum and played with a lot of heart, controlling the tempo and giving the Redmen a late push. In the end the team came together - The defense made some key stops, the offense picked up some crucial first downs and with help from the leg of Willie McGee the special teams were able to win field position when it mattered the most. The Redmen have a lot to work on as they go into Week 4 vs Balgonie.

Week 2 - Balfour 43 vs Thom 1

Players of the Game

Offensive Player - RB Matt Frass - 27 carries, 240 yards 3 TD's
Defensive Player - LB Kris Charuk - 8tkls, 4 sacks, 1 deflection
Special Teams Player - DB Ryan Serbu
Lineman - OL/DL Sean Belisle
Hit of the Game - REC Riley Hadiken
Practice Player of the Week - QB Spencer Pawliw

The Balfour Redmen (2-0) got the ground game going on a windy evening at Mosaic Stadium. The Balfour Redmen and Sheldon-Williams Spartans will tangle at Leibel Field, also at 5: 15 p.m.
CAMPBELL TARTANS
It was a special season for the Campbell Tartans in 2010, one in which they captured the 4A city and provincial championships.
But that is in the past. The Tartans, while expecting to wear the target on their back this season, have every intention of creating another memorable season in 2011.
"Any time you win the league or win a provincial championship, everybody is going to think it's a big deal to beat that team," said Tartans assistant coach Ryan Hall. "We have tried to remind our guys that last year was last year and it's over. This is a new team and these guys will have to define themselves. They can't ride on the coat tails from last year."
The Tartans will get a stiff test in their regular-season opener on Friday when they square off against the Riffel Royals.
"We know Riffel is going to be tough every year," Hall said. "They have a good line and good guys coming at you out of the backfield. We're really going to have to be ready to play tough."
The Tartans coaching staff is high this season on the defensive unit, which is led by veteran lineman Ryan Warner and converted linebacker Matt Libby. But the strength of the defence may be in the secondary with the likes of Max Kaczmer, Isaac Maze and Marcus Hall.
On offence, lineman Evan Johnson will set the tone up front. Receivers Davin Johnston and Richard Sindani are expected to make plays, and Tyler Gaber will likely emerge as the starting running back. Who starts at quarterback is still the big question with this team. Three candidates are in the mix, with Grade 11 athlete Connor Crawford leading that race.
RIFFEL ROYALS
The Royals return a strong core of athletes that helped the team finish atop the Schwann Conference in 2010. Mason Rossler, Ryan Filyk, Matt Knight and Lance Pitka all played on the under-18 provincial team this summer and will be expected to lead the Royals in the RIFL.
Rossler will play on both sides of the ball as a linebacker and running back. He's also a captain and team leader. Filyk is the anchor of the defensive secondary from his safety position, while Pitka will solidify the linebacking group. Knight, meanwhile, is a two-way lineman who will provide size and strength from the guard and nose tackle spots.
"With that nucleus, I think we'll be in the hunt this year," insisted Royals head coach John Bolen. "That's a pretty strong group of guys and they will be our leaders."
Rookie quarterbacks Austin Thompson and Jeremy Sylvester are still battling for the starter's job. Bolen has appreciated their competitiveness during training camp and plans to alternate both players until one emerges.

The Royals will get an excellent test to start the season as they will battle the Campbell Tartans on Friday.
"It's going to be tough to face the defending provincial champs in the first game of the season," Bolen said. "It's always good to start with a tough team and figure out what you're made of. Our guys are hungry for them."
BALFOUR REDMEN
The Redmen possess several good athletes at key positions, many of which picked up valuable experience this past summer with the provincial under-18 team.
Head coach Clay Drouin expects his offence to be solid. Matt Frass is entering his second year as the team's starting tailback and is looking to improve in a productive 2010 season.
Mitch Nelson is a Grade 12 lineman who will play on both sides of the ball. Drouin has pegged Nelson as a captain this season and appreciates his leadership and experience.
The athletic Riley Wilson is a threat to score every time he touches the ball, according to the Redmen coaching staff. He is a Grade 12 receiver and a captain who possesses big-play capabilities.
Grade 12 athlete Brandon Jelinski is in his third year with the team and is considered the leader of the defence from his defensive back spot. Jelinski, Nelson and Frass all suited up for the provincial under-18 team this summer.
"We have a group that is committed to each other," Drouin said. "They're hard-working kids who simply enjoy being around one another. We are focused and determined to get better every day."
LEBOLDUS GOLDEN SUNS
Opponents of the Golden Suns can expect a steady dose of Grade 11 quarterback Noah Picton again this season. Last season, Picton led all Schwann Conference pivots in passing yards, and Suns head coach John Foord has every intention to unleash his biggest weapon again this year. Picton gained additional experience by playing with the provincial under-18 team this past summer.
One of Picton's main targets will be three-year veteran slotback Robbie Avram. The Grade 12 athlete is also a two-time RIFL all-star at his defensive back position.
Protecting Picton and giving him time to throw will be the Grade 12 offensive line trio of Connor Hydaman, Nick Howell and Delvin Plesniewicz. All three will also anchor the defensive line.
"We expect to be competitive this season, experienced up front and athletic in skill positions," Foord noted.
BALGONIe GREENALL GRIFFINS
The Greenall Griffins are hoping to make significant improvements this year after a disappointing 1-6 campaign last season.
Plenty familiar faces return to help the Balgonie-based bunch in 2011, including a solid core of seniors at impact positions.
Third-year running back Kenton McDougall is a hardnosed runner who will look to get the Griffins' ground game rolling. Like McDougall, Derek Scherle and Kody Kalaman are two Grade 12 athletes who will be expected to make an impact on offence from their receiver spots.
The Griffins implemented a new offensive system during the off-season under the guidance of new offensive coordinator Shane Cogbill. Griffins head coach Cory Lechner hopes a fresh gameplan can kickstart the Griffins.

"Our offensive unit is soaking up Shane's new system and I'm excited about it," Lechner said. "We are optimistic that we will be a lot more competitive on both sides of the ball. As usual, a playoff spot is what we are gunning for."
On defence, Greenall will be led by defensive back Colton Hendricks and big Nick Younghans on the defensive line. Both are in their Grade 12 season. Lechner also sees strong and speedy Grade 11 linebacker Matt Criddle as a key component on defence.
THOM TROJANS
The Trojans have a strong and rich tradition in the RIFL, one that includes numerous city and provincial championships. But recently the program has endured some lean years. Trojans head coach Blaine Pearce is eager for the program to regain its winning ways.
"We are trying to rebuild the successful program we once had in the late '90s and from 2000 to 2003," Pearce explained. "We have a good coaching staff with knowledge and experience to work with the players. Our goals this season are to be competitive and make the playoffs. We know that will be tough in the 4A conference but we are committed to working hard to accomplish those goals."
The Trojans will look to several senior players to provide leadership and stability, including David Keogan and Wade Lavallee on the offensive and defensive lines, and seniors Tanner Samwald and Curtis Mailander at receiver and defensive back.
The Trojans also have a number of players who have graduated from the minor ranks to the high school level and are expected to make major contributions.
Grade 11 quarterback Preston Sjoberg is one of those RMF graduates.
"He is doing very well," Pearce said. "He worked all summer on football and the coaches are looking forward to his contributions over the next two years."
SHELDON-WILLIAMS SPARTANS
The Spartans are in good hands with Richards and Richards. Brothers Cohen and his younger brother Ellis are the quarterbacking duo at Sheldon this season. Although Ellis is only in Grade 9, he shows promise for the future.
Brandon Grasdal will carry the load in the offensive backfield as the starting tailback.
On the defensive side of the ball is where the Spartans will excel in the early part of the season. Wildred Jerome is a third-year leader who will assume the middle linebacker position. Jerome was a member of the under-18 provincial team but as a defensive lineman.
Justin Anderson is arguably the team's best athlete. In his senior year, Anderson will solidify the defence from his cornerback position.
WINSTON KNOLL WOLVERINES
Two years removed from their 4A city championship, the Wolverines are gunning for a return to the big game this season under new head coach Danny Paskiw.
The Wolverines will deploy a relatively young team in 2011, led by Grade 11 offensive lineman Keaton Hain. Paskiw describes Hain as a "vocal and physical leader who plays with intensity and helps develop the younger players."
His presence is crucial as the Wolverines plan to slot a few new players in key positions on offence. Jaeden Marwick, their Grade 11 quarterback, is one of the youngsters Paskiw will lean on this season. Alex Thompson, another Grade 11 athlete, is expected to be one of the main playmakers on offence and a main target for Marwick from his receiver spot.
On defence, Paskiw points to newcomers Tyrell Hubick along the defensive line and defensive back Taylor Mayer. Both players impressed the coaching staff during training camp.
"Our strengths will be our work ethic discipline and our many returning Grade 11 players," Paskiw said.
"I think we will be a competitive team that will battle hard against our worthy opponents in the Schwann Conference.
"We have a good mix of veterans and new players who work hard and are excited to start the season."

Read more: http://www.leaderpost.com/sports/Tartans+ready+title+defence/5368452/story.html#ixzz1XNqHKgNH

2011 Main Camp Registration & Info

Dear Players and Parents,

I welcome you to another year of Redmen Football! - 47 new and returning players hit the field on a beautiful Friday afternoon. Day 1 saw all positions work on fundamentals which concluded with a 1 on 1 session. There was a great vibe on the field as everyone was flying around trying to make a play. It is very evident that the hard work many of the players have put in during the off-season is paying off. Players will hit the field Saturday morning @ 11:00am

Practice Player of the Day - SB Riley Wilson - Ran some great routes, made a few tough catches during 1 on 1's

Notables:
- SB's Willam McGee & Riley Wilson both had shoe string catches during 1 on 1 's
- new comers DB Logan McMurty and DB Randon Friedle looked very good during drills - gr 9's Luke Trithart and Ryan Serbu also impressed with good technique
- All veterans seemed very focused throughout, setting a high tempo pace and leading by example.

DAY 2 - Practice #2 - The weather remained beautiful as the Redmen hit the field for the morning session. The same work ethic and intensity shown yesterday was displayed again from the Seniors. Practice finished with 2 OKLAHOMA drills going at the same time. Everyone seemed to enjoy the first real contact of the camp.

Practice Player of the Morning Session - DL Jaeger Sutherland - as a gr 9, displayed the ability to hang in there with Seniors during 1 on 1's and was impressive during Oklahoma.

Notables:
- Depth at runningback - Frass, Thauberger, Brightman, Rorke all working hard
- Positive attitude - seniors leading by example in a positive way - helping new players learn
- LB Dansereau biggest hit during Oklahoma drill

Practice #3 - With more team focused time the Offense and Defense were beginning to make strides. During Pass Skeleton and a mini-scrimmage to finish off practice, the Offense looked balanced and ready for Sunday's scrimmage.

Notables:
- QB Spencer Pawliw running the offense well. Hooking up with WR Riley Wilson on a number of occasions
- DB's Jelinski, McMurty, Friedle & Biram making some plays
- DE's Bodnar and Baumgartner providing speed on the ends
- A few injuries over the weekend - DB Geoff Davidson (hand), RB Tanner Brightman (shoulder) & WR Nathan Bailey (shoulder) are all sidelined for the scrimmage

DAY 3 - After review and a solid Pass skelly session to close out the morning practice the players were given a break before the scrimmage.

A beautiful sunday afternoon for parents and alumni to take in a game - fantastic weather all weekend. Players were set to play out a 40 play scrimmage, depending on a few factors. We ended up having played 50 at the players request as everyone seemed fresh.

The offense was firing on all cyclinders behind an impressive O-line anchored by Jeremy Zver, Mitch Nelson, Kyle Herom and Lucas Mcphee. The offense drove with ease for most of the afternnon despite the best efforts from the defense.

Highlights:

- RB's Frass, Thauberger and Rorke busted off nice runs inside and outside.
- QB Spencer Pawliw hooked up with SB Riley Wilson on a few occasions for TD's
- grade 9 WR Madison Nicol caught a deep one which capped a weekend that impressed all coaches with his routes and work ethic
- DB Ryan Serbu had a few nice tackles to protect the outside
- LB's Dustin Trudeau and Kyle Dansereau along with DL Brandon Bodnar & Stephen Baumgartner were active all afternoon

Overall a great weekend for Redmen Football, which kick started with a Steak Night Fundraiser (Our goals were met for this event!!!). All coaches were impressed with the attitudes & leadership of the veterans as well as the level of talent the grade 9's displayed.

2635 STAR LITE ST.

Regina, SK

S4V 3E1

(306) 352-5482

STEAK NIGHT FUNDRAISER

In order to cover the majority of expenses for a road trip to Sherwood Park, Alberta, the Redmen Football team will be involved in fundraising efforts. type='text'>2009 Season Review

Thank You

I'd like to start off by thanking everyone for their support and encouragement throughout the year!
Everyone at Balfour Collegiate; Principal Cindy Hock, staff advisor Lorne Neithercut, Glen Fekula, Mick Panko and many others for helping make football at Balfour a positive experience for our student athletes.

- the parents for putting up with the extended practices and countless team meetings/video sessions, the fan support on game days and everything else that you do away from the football field
- the coaching staff for the dedication, enthusiasiam and pure enjoyment that was displayed throughout the year. Coaching is a passion that we share and I am very excited to continue to grow as a coach and a coaching staff with all of you.
- the players for the time and effort you put into the 2009 edition of Redmen football. From offseason work outs, spring camp, summer throw arounds, main camp, exhibition game to our semi-final loss in October, everyone on that field got better as a football player and person. I wish our Senior Class of 2009 all the best in their future endeavours, on and off the field. Once a Redmen, Always a Redmen.
